Cruising Blog: Port Vila, Vanuatu

Early next morning I was woken by the sound of music wafting through our balcony door. I pulled back the curtain to find that we had arrived in the picturesque harbour side capital of Port Vila Vanuatu.

Some of the brightly dressed Vanuatu locals were there to welcome us ashore with a smile and a lilting song as the heat of the day hit us.

Hard to believe that just a few days earlier we had been in the cooler spring days in New Zealand.

Port Vila is the trading centre and capital of Vanuatu. It’s perfectly located around a beautiful harbour on the south-western coast of the island of Efate.

We were taken by one of the local Taxi drivers on a tour of the capital, stopping at several high points of the island – providing jaw dropping views over the amazing landscape, tropical rainforests spread down onto the coastline which was met by white sand beaches and crystal clear azure coloured waters.

We visited a local coffee factory which had one of the best coffees I have ever tasted and then it was onto a tour through the dirt streets of a local village. Certainly an eye opener to compare the living conditions of the local people to how we live back home in New Zealand. But regardless of their simple conditions they definitely showed us that they are a happy friendly people.
