Hugs

Love Jewelry

Continuing on from my last blog – I would like to show you a few more of my absolute favourite pieces of Unique New Zealand Jewellery. I love working in this industry where I get to choose such special pieces of Paua Shell Jewellery to wear each and every day.

Diamond Earrings and Diamond Pendant

PE200/PE100 and GP800/PO800

The Diamond, in its rarity and beauty, is a symbol of purity and innocence, of love and fidelity, and embraces strength of character, ethics, and faithfulness to oneself and others.
Ariki New Zealand’s jewellery designers have perfectly stylised our gorgeous diamond shaped jewellery piece to embrace these characteristics.
The diamond symbol has long been valued for its immaculate beauty. Its physical appearance is associated with valuable attributes that are relevant to living a meaningful life, such as purity, clarity and wisdom.
And of course the Paua Shell cabochon in each and every pair of Diamond Earrings or Diamond Pendants are most definitely beautiful. The myriad of colours shimmer and shine in the light – just like a fine diamond.
Traditionally diamonds have been labelled a “girl’s best friend” and this set are absolutely one of my favourite jewellery “friends”

"Diamond" Earrings PE200

GP899/PO899 – Beloved Pendant
The simple definition of beloved is something that is very special, important, or valuable – esteemed as rare or precious.
My stunning Beloved pendant is certainly one that is of special importance to me.
Although I treasure each and every piece of unique New Zealand Paua Shell jewellery I wear. My beloved pendant is most definitely one of my most treasured. Wearing it reminds me of all that is most precious to me. My family, my friends, and the precious piece of paradise I call my home and my beautiful country of New Zealand.
Of course the Paua Shell which adorns this elegant pendant is esteemed around the globe for its unique beauty and point of difference.
The Paua is unique to New Zealand – and myself and my fellow “family members” here at Ariki New Zealand Limited are very proud to be able to showcase this precious shell to the world.

GP584/PO584 – Hug Pendant
A hug given by a loved one is certainly something to be treasured forever. And another of my favourite pieces of unique Paua Shell jewellery, my Hug pendant symbolises these special moments in time.
The smooth sleek lines of the jewellery panel to me look very much like two arms encircling the Paua Shell Cabochon in a warm and loving hug.
Sometimes hugs can give us Goosebumps, sometimes they recharge our hearts. They can be given to us by those people who can heal our wounds with a gentle caress, accept life with infinite kindness, and decorate all the difficulties with their smiles.
Sometimes an embrace can, almost literally, rescue us from being lost at sea, put back together our broken parts, break our fears, soften our weaknesses, and create a work of art with the pieces of our heart.
One of the first human experiences in life for the new-born baby is lying in the arms of its mother nursing at her breast. Any child should receive many forms of parental touching during its growth, particularly embracing in the form of hugs, which become symbols for something positive: joy, security, and confidence.
To me there is nothing more special in the world than to feel the arms of my loved ones, my children or my grandson around my neck as they hug me tight.
I treasure these special moments in time just as I do my unique and special Hug Pendant.

Foxgloves

Christmas gifts: nature themed earrings (leaf, laurel leaf, fox glove, chrysalis)

Foxgloves

Tis the season…. Well very nearly! I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by! It seems like only yesterday that I was talking to you about Christmas last year and here we are with it nearly upon us again!

It is at this time of the year that I begin to think about all the very special pieces of Ariki New Zealand Jewellery that are dear to my heart and most importantly those that I may give as gifts to my friends and family.
Let me share a few with you….and maybe give you a few ideas for the special people in your lives too.
I would like to begin with a few pieces our designers have created with nature themes in mind.

Paua Leaf Earrings - Ariki New Zealand Jewellery

PE388/PE488 – Leaf Earrings
I adore these wee earrings which remind me so much of the trees in the native bush surrounding my home. I think that trees with their whispering leaves are at the heart of Mother Nature…they remind us of all that is simple and pure in the world. Our beautiful Leaf jewellery symbolises this special bond we have with these trees. The perfect gift for the gardener or nature lover in your life.

PE188/PE288 – Laurel Leaf Earrings

The humble laurel leaf has long been associated with Creativity. Laurel leaves were commonly put under pillows at night to gain inspiration through dreams our designers used their own creativity when they created this beautiful laurel leave complete with its own “shadow” or mirror image behind. I plan to give these beautiful earrings to a very dear friend of mine who inspires regularly me with her imagination and creativity.

PE336/PE436 – Fox Glove Flower Earrings

The foxglove flower is enchanting for its sheer beauty but traditionally it was thought to be a kind of magnet for fairies, lending itself to a magical air of mystery.

On a recent trip to the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand I was captivated by the thousands of Foxglove Flowers growing on the side of the highway. They certainly reminded me of our

Beautiful Paua Shell Earrings.
The Paua Shell cabochons on our Fox Glove Earrings are a myriad of colours just as the real flowers are and they shine and sparkle when viewed at different angles – adding their own touch of magic.

PO583/GP583 – Chrysalis Pendant

This year was a challenging time for one of my darling sisters as her husband of over 40 years passed away – but I have seen her go from strength to strength as she learns a new way of life without her soul mate by her side. To honour these inspirational changes I plan to gift her our gorgeous Chrysalis Pendant.
Just as the caterpillar is protectively encased in its Chrysalis before immerging as a stunningly beautiful butterfly the Paua Shell cabochon on our Chrysalis pendant is nestled within the sleek smooth curves of the surrounding panel. This reminds the wearer of a stage in their life where they feel they need to rest and recuperate before blossoming into a life filled with new possibilities.

Jewellery for Weddings and Anniversaries: Eternity – Earrings and Pendants

ETERNITY

Wedding Jewellery

One of the benefits of being in the Paua Shell jewellery industry is that I am never without exquisite unique pieces.
I never leave the house without jewellery in fact I almost feel naked without it.

Eternity Earrings – Paua – PE490/PE390
Eternity Pendant – Paua GP590/PO590
Eternity Earrings – Jade – JE490
Eternity Pendant – Jade – GO590

Eternity Earrings PE490

A sphere within a sphere our beautiful eternity symbol lends itself to the feeling of never ending time and motion as it curls around the precious cabochon. A truly timeless piece of New Zealand jewellery, I always wear these Eternity Earrings and Eternity Pendant with the perfectly matched Koru Stud Earrings Paua PE489/PE389 or JE489 Koru Stud Earrings Jade as a perfect set.
Eternity means “time without end, or infinity,” like people who promise to love one another for eternity — they aren’t planning to ever split up.
Eternity jewellery pieces are given to the loved ones of those who wish to provide their sweetheart with a token of just how loved and appreciated they are. As such, these pieces are typically reserved for occasions and moments in a couple’s life that are marked with particular love.
These can include engagements, wedding days, the day a child is born, anniversaries, Valentine’s Days, adversities that were successfully overcome together, and the day the couple buys their first house.

Eternity Pendant (Jade) GO590

The meaning that each couple gives to eternity jewellery makes the jewellery even more special and will ensure that the woman will treasure the symbol for the rest of her lifetime.
Not only will be the jewellery be treasured for itself, but the personal meaning behind the gift will ensure that the person to whom it is given will remember it with all the more love.
As such, these fine unique pieces of jewellery will remain a part of the giver and recipient’s family as a beloved heirloom.
Our precious and unique New Zealand Jewellery lend themselves ideally to the perfect piece of Eternity Jewellery for the special loved ones in our lives.

Squares and rectangles: cufflinks and long bar earrings in Paua and Jade

Rectangles

SQUARES/RECTANGLES

Another shape or symbol which features predominately in our unique New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery range is the square and rectangle shapes.
To me these shapes represent stability. In fact, the rectangle is the most used area shape in the majority of designs. Whether it be jewellery, furniture or even websites.

The reason for its popularity is because it is a trusted familiar shape that represents honesty, solidity and stability.
And when I think further about the humble square shape it leads me to think that the four sides of a square could symbolise:

  • The four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west).
  • The four major season (winter, spring, and summer, autumn).
  • The four cosmic elements (suns, moons, planets, stars).
  • The four common phases of human life (birth, child, adult, death).
  • The four prime elements (fire, earth, air, water).

As squares and rectangles have straight lines and right angles they have a very mathematical, balanced feel. These shapes scream rational, practical and conformity. As far as shapes go, these are neither flashy nor attention seekers – some may even venture to say that they are boring, however our clever jewellery designers have twisted and turned them to add interest to the humble square or rectangle New Zealand Jewellery pieces.

Square Cufflinks – Paua  – GP211/PO211
Square Cufflinks – Jade – GO211

Square Cufflinks GP211
Square Cufflinks (Jade) GO211

I don’t personally wear cufflinks of course but I have purchased a few sets for my three brothers who wear them with pride adorning their business shirts.
The myriad of colours on the unique New Zealand Paua Shell cabochon shimmers and shines when worn against a plain white business shirt – but also have the bonus of taking on the colours of any other shirt that is worn. This makes them a truly versatile set to wear on any occasion.
The shiny deep green of the Jade cabochon also adds an air of sophistication to any plain business shirt.
Our most popular cufflinks in our range are in fact the Square Cufflinks which lend themselves handsomely to any discerning gentleman’s attire. And the perfect unique New Zealand Jewellery for men.

Long Bar Earrings – Paua – PE224/PE124
Long Bar Earrings – Jade – JE224

These beautiful stunning Long bar earrings represent understated elegance and sophistication. The striking combination of smooth sleek lines and the beauty of the cabochon combine to make a set of New Zealand jewellery which I wear with pride.
With their smooth, straight lines and perfect right angles, rectangles lend a sense of stability and formality. Something about four points just feels solid (think about the four points of a compass). We trust the shape because it feels dependable and safe.

The Long Bar Earrings are certainly one of my statement pieces of fine New Zealand handcrafted jewellery.

Circle shaped Paua Shell Jewellery

Circles

CIRCLES

Another shape or symbol which features predominately in our unique New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery range is the circle or round shape.

To me the circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, and timelessness.

As the sun, it is masculine power; as the soul and as encircling waters, it has a feminine maternal nature. It implies an idea of movement, and symbolizes the cycle of time, the planets’ journey around the sun (the circle of the zodiac), and the great rhythm of the universe.

To the native people of New Zealand – the Maori – a Circle or Porowhita represents the never ending circle of life and nature.
The closed circle is said to represent the circle of life which is has no beginning or end, is seamless and of which we are all a part. It also tells of the stars and planets which are part of the circle of life and contain the knowledge of our origins.
It is often used to enclose other elements such as the Koru, linking love and new life or new beginnings with the circle of life.

For an artist the circle represents the relationship or oneness between the artist and his craft, bringing together head, hand and heart.
Just as our elegant timeless pieces of Paua Shell Jewellery are handcrafted by our staff artists to perfection in every way.

Large Double Round Bangle GB102/PB102

I find this piece a more of a “special occasion” piece. Its understated elegance completes any special outfit. I recently attended a wedding and was rapt to see that this piece had been chosen for the bridesmaid’s jewellery. Certainly a special memory and a piece of jewellery for them to treasure always.

Small Round Ring – GP912/PO912

I see my Small Round ring as having great meaning – Circles have no beginning or end. They represent the eternal whole and in every culture represent the sun, the earth, the moon, the universe, and other celestial objects between – Our elegant round ring reminds me of the clear night skies we experience at this time of the year – with the moon shining brightly in the crisp night air.

Wrap Around Ring – GP941/PO941

Probably the most versatile and beautiful of our range is the Wrap around Ring. The ornately scalloped edge frames the slightly rounded cabochon elegantly on our Wrap around Ring – the smooth sleek panel then extends to wrap around the finger gently creating a truly unique piece of jewellery. It has become a forever treasured keepsake.

Round Stud Earrings – PE213/PE113
Antique Round Earrings – PE251/PE151

These simply elegant Round shaped earrings are another of my “go to” every day pair of Paua Shell Earrings. The advantage of having two pierce holes in each ear means that I can where the small Round Stud earrings in the top hole and the gorgeous Antique styled Round Earrings in the bottom hole. They also go perfectly with my Small Round Ring (GP912/PO912) as a Set which showcases the unique New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery perfectly.
