Christmas New Zealand

Our big news this year is that he is having a baby sister!!! My darling daughter is due to have a wee girl in early January 2019 so by the time I speak to you again I will be a grandmother for a second time and can’t wait to share photos of my wee princess.

So until then – I wish you a very happy, safe and peaceful holiday season wherever you may be around the globe!

Meri Kirihimete.

My Paua Shell Christmas tree has had an addition this year – a topping wreath constructed of even more Paua Shell and an extra special species of Paua called Queen Paua.
These creamy white Paua are another species native to the waters of New Zealand.
I have the tree covered in solar lights in blue and white this year and it truly is beautiful to see on our clear, warm summer nights.

Christmas Gifts: butterly jewellery, diamond and myriad pendants.

I can never limit myself to just a few pieces of our unique New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery – I love to tell you all about the special pieces and their meanings. They have actually taken on special unique meanings to me personally and to those for whom I purchase them – each piece captures a special moment in time – a memory perhaps, or a significant occasion. Some of these I will tell you about below:

PE181/PE281 – Butterfly Earrings
PO716/GP716 – Butterfly Brooch – Large

Butterfly earring new zealand

Butterflies remind us of summer, freedom and happiness – nothing says this more than seeing a beautiful butterfly on a hot summer’s day fluttering carefree and effortlessly through the air. Wearing our beautiful butterfly jewellery piece will give you a sense of these lazy hazy summer days.
But to me personally the butterfly also signifies the beginning of the New Year and signals a sense of transformation – a time to evaluate life in its current state and set goals for manifesting change. The butterfly symbolizes transformation and joy. Its dance reflects the need for movement from where we are to our next phase of being. A perfect gift for someone who is contemplating changes in their life.

PO800/GP800 – Diamond Pendant
PE100/PE200 – Diamond Earrings
SE12 – Diamond Earrings – Sterling Silver

Diamond Shaped Earrings

The Diamond, in its rarity and beauty, is a symbol of purity and innocence, of love and fidelity, and embraces strength of character, ethics, and faithfulness to oneself and others. We have stylised our gorgeous diamond shaped Paua Shell jewellery piece to embrace these characteristics.

Christmas and New Year are perfect times to honour those most precious people in your life and to give a token of your affection to show them your love, as a memento of your special relationships.

PO802/GP802 – Myriad Pendant

I have left the best until last – My most absolute favourite in our New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery Collection – this gorgeous large oval pendant showcases the myriad of iridescent colours of the Paua Shell or “sea opal” to perfection. It reminds me so much of the colours of gorgeous country of New Zealand and the Ocean surrounding our island nation.
I wear this beautiful piece of jewellery with pride for industry in which I am lucky enough to be a part of and to me it symbolises all that makes Ariki New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery precious and unique.

Christmas Gifts to Friends and Family

Tis the season…. Well very nearly! I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by! It seems like only yesterday that I was talking to you about Christmas last year and here we are with it nearly upon us again!

It is at this time of the year that I begin to think about all the very special pieces of Ariki New Zealand Jewellery that are dear to my heart and most importantly those that I may give as gifts to my friends and family.

Let me share a few with you….and maybe give you a few ideas for the special people in your lives too.
I would like to begin with a few pieces our designers have created with nature themes in mind.

Leaf Earrings

PE388/PE488

I adore these wee earrings which remind me so much of the trees in the native bush surrounding my home. I think that trees with their whispering leaves are at the heart of Mother Nature…they remind us of all that is simple and pure in the world. Our beautiful Leaf jewellery symbolises this special bond we have with these trees. The perfect gift for the gardener or nature lover in your life.

Leaf Earrings

Laurel Leaf Earrings

PE188/PE288

The humble laurel leaf has long been associated with Creativity. Laurel leaves were commonly put under pillows at night to gain inspiration through dreams our designers used their own creativity when they created this beautiful laurel leave complete with its own “shadow” or mirror image behind. I plan to give these beautiful earrings to a very dear friend of mine who inspires regularly me with her imagination and creativity.

Paua Earrings

Fox Glove Flower Earrings

PE336/PE436

The foxglove flower is enchanting for its sheer beauty but traditionally it was thought to be a kind of magnet for fairies, lending itself to a magical air of mystery.
On a recent trip to the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand I was captivated by the thousands of Foxglove Flowers growing on the side of the highway. They certainly reminded me of our Beautiful Paua Shell Earrings.
The Paua Shell cabochons on our Fox Glove Earrings are a myriad of colours just as the real flowers are and they shine and sparkle when viewed at different angles – adding their own touch of magic.

Chrysalis Pendant

PO583/GP583

This year was a challenging time for one of my darling sisters as her husband of over 40 years passed away – but I have seen her go from strength to strength as she learns a new way of life without her soul mate by her side. To honour these inspirational changes I plan to gift her our gorgeous Chrysalis Pendant.
Just as the caterpillar is protectively encased in its Chrysalis before immerging as a stunningly beautiful butterfly the Paua Shell cabochon on our Chrysalis pendant is nestled within the sleek smooth curves of the surrounding panel. This reminds the wearer of a stage in their life where they feel they need to rest and recuperate before blossoming into a life filled with new possibilities.

Chrysalis Pendant

Waikawa

I recently produced the art work above to honour this special place and incorporated some of our very precious and unique Paua Shell into the design to represent the sea.
I am also proud to be involve in the exclusive and important part that Ariki New Zealand play in the history of our island paradise and showcasing the unique Paua Shell Jewellery to the world.

Filigree Hook Pendant

GP553/PO553

The beautiful kowhaiwhai or scroll like patterns on this classic fish hook pendant are designed to represent the importance and significance of family, relationships and connections.
To New Zealand’s native people the Maori, The fish hook symbol is said to represent prosperity and safe travel over water.
Our clever designers have incorporated both the kowhaiwhai filigree and fish hook motif into this one design.

To me the gorgeous Paua Shell Cabochon on this piece also perfectly captures the colours of the sea surrounding our island paradise country.
Traditionally Maori were very reliant on the bounty they caught from the sea to survive. It constituted a large amount of their daily food needs and with it Maori flourished as a people. Maori had a very strong connection to Tangaroa, god of the sea and attributed this abundance to him.

Fish Hook Pendants

I can only guess, but think that because of the strong connection to Tangaroa, wearing a fish hook over water would ensure safe passage because it shows a level of respect to Tangaroa for the bounty he provided.

The Kowhaiwhai pattern itself is stylised on the Koiri traditional Maori pattern which means to flourish.
I wear this special unique time honoured New Zealand Jewellery piece to signify my special connection to the sea by which I live and the abundance of sea food or Kaimoana that my Maori neighbours so generously provide.

Squares and rectangles: cufflinks and long bar earrings in Paua and Jade

SQUARES/RECTANGLES

Another shape or symbol which features predominately in our unique New Zealand Paua Shell Jewellery range is the square and rectangle shapes.
To me these shapes represent stability. In fact, the rectangle is the most used area shape in the majority of designs. Whether it be jewellery, furniture or even websites.

The reason for its popularity is because it is a trusted familiar shape that represents honesty, solidity and stability.
And when I think further about the humble square shape it leads me to think that the four sides of a square could symbolise:

  • The four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west).
  • The four major season (winter, spring, and summer, autumn).
  • The four cosmic elements (suns, moons, planets, stars).
  • The four common phases of human life (birth, child, adult, death).
  • The four prime elements (fire, earth, air, water).

As squares and rectangles have straight lines and right angles they have a very mathematical, balanced feel. These shapes scream rational, practical and conformity. As far as shapes go, these are neither flashy nor attention seekers – some may even venture to say that they are boring, however our clever jewellery designers have twisted and turned them to add interest to the humble square or rectangle New Zealand Jewellery pieces.

Square Cufflinks – Paua  – GP211/PO211
Square Cufflinks – Jade – GO211

Square Cufflinks GP211 Square Cufflinks (Jade) GO211

I don’t personally wear cufflinks of course but I have purchased a few sets for my three brothers who wear them with pride adorning their business shirts.
The myriad of colours on the unique New Zealand Paua Shell cabochon shimmers and shines when worn against a plain white business shirt – but also have the bonus of taking on the colours of any other shirt that is worn. This makes them a truly versatile set to wear on any occasion.
The shiny deep green of the Jade cabochon also adds an air of sophistication to any plain business shirt.
Our most popular cufflinks in our range are in fact the Square Cufflinks which lend themselves handsomely to any discerning gentleman’s attire. And the perfect unique New Zealand Jewellery for men.

Long Bar Earrings – Paua – PE224/PE124
Long Bar Earrings – Jade – JE224

These beautiful stunning Long bar earrings represent understated elegance and sophistication. The striking combination of smooth sleek lines and the beauty of the cabochon combine to make a set of New Zealand jewellery which I wear with pride.
With their smooth, straight lines and perfect right angles, rectangles lend a sense of stability and formality. Something about four points just feels solid (think about the four points of a compass). We trust the shape because it feels dependable and safe.

The Long Bar Earrings are certainly one of my statement pieces of fine New Zealand handcrafted jewellery.
