Film in New Zealand
New Zealand’s popularity as an international film making destination means movie buffs are spoiled for choice when it comes to real film locations to visit
So I thought in this blog I would give you an overview of just some of the stunning locations where international films have been filmed in New Zealand.
Karekare beach – The Piano
The breath-taking Karekare beach in Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges was made famous in the 1993 movie The Piano, directed by New Zealander Jane Campion. It also landed Anna Paquin an Oscar and launched her international acting career.
This stunning region in the North Island of New Zealand includes more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline, and natural treasures like the Karekare Falls.
The Waitakere Ranges Regional Park is a place where pristine bush, thriving native wildlife and rugged black sand surf beaches come together. The ‘wild west’ feels like another world away, but is only a 40-minute drive from the city centre.
With over 250 kilometres of walking tracks, the ranges are a wonderful place to explore on foot, surrounded by spectacular scenery. Favourite scenic spots like the Karekare Falls, are very accessible.
Popular short walks deeper into the ranges include Kite kite track (45 minutes) where you’ll discover waterfalls, streams, pools and beautiful native bush.
